SPRINGFIELD – The Illinois Department of Public Health (IDPH) has confirmed the first human West Nile virus case reported in Illinois for 2009. The St. Clair County Health Department reported a person in their 50s with onset of illness in late August.

IDOT data reports late-night hours as the deadliest time on Illinois roadways
Impaired driving and low safety belt use the reason; Law enforcement out in full force
SPRINGFIELD – The Illinois Department of Transportation’s Division of Traffic Safety today released data showing the marked difference in motor vehicle fatalities occurring late at night compared to other times of the day. The date underscores the fact that the nighttime fatalities have the highest involvement of alcohol and the lowest safety belt usage as compared to all fatalities occurring on Illinois roadways.

State public health department and state board of education team up to keep students healthy during upcoming Fall flu season

According to Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) data, Illinois ranks first among all states in the total expenditure of ARRA funds. To date, expenditures of ARRA funds in Illinois total $170,605,614, which is nearly triple the expenditures of the next highest state.

State Public Health Director Announces New H1N1 Influenza Web Site Reporting System
SPRINGFIELD – Illinois Department of Public Health Director Dr. Damon T. Arnold is announcing a new Web site system for reporting H1N1 flu activity in Illinois. Similar to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) reporting system, the Illinois Department of Public Health (IDPH) is no longer reporting confirmed and probable cases of H1N1 flu in Illinois on its Web site. Instead, IDPH has transitioned to using its traditional flu surveillance systems to track the both H1N1 flu and seasonal influenza. H1N1 flu data will continue to be collected, but the IDPH Web site will only report the number of confirmed hospitalizations and deaths related to H1N1 flu to determine the severity of flu activity in Illinois.

Illinois Department of Insurance Issues Order Against Universal Casualty Company
Department imposes $200,000 fine
CHICAGO – The Illinois Department of Insurance has issued an Order against Universal Casualty Company (UCC) for failing to adopt and maintain procedures for the prompt investigation and settlement of consumers’ claims. On August 11, 2009, the Department ordered UCC, an automobile insurance company based in Elk Grove Village which does business in Illinois, Indiana, and Missouri, to pay a $200,000 fine and correct its claims processes immediately.

Laws will prohibit dumping of unused medication, track water usage
CHICAGO – August 10, 2009. Governor Pat Quinn today signed several key environmental bills, including one that will prohibit health care institutions from flushing unused medications into public wastewater. Other legislation signed into law by Governor Quinn will track water usage by high capacity wells throughout Illinois.

Arnold, Director of the Illinois Department of Public Health, is urging Illinoisans to take preventive actions during this extremely hot weather to avoid heat-related illness, such as heat-stroke. Additionally, Illinois Department of Human Services (IDHS) is urging Illinoisans to take advantage of the seven Illinois Tollway Oases in Chicago that serve as cooling centers on the weekends. New Legislation Will Save Lives on Roads in Illinois
CHICAGO – August 6, 2009. Governor Pat Quinn signed a bill today at Northeastern Illinois University that bans motorists from sending text messages while driving in Illinois. Additionally, the governor signed legislation that makes it illegal to talk on a cell phone while driving through a highway construction zone or school speed zone. The new laws go into effect on January 1, 2010.

CHICAGO – Governor Pat Quinn today announced $13.1 million in Safe Routes to School grants to schools and communities across the state. This 100 percent federally funded program is designed to enable and encourage children to walk and bike to school.

Medical Professionals Offered More Time for Compliance with Parental Notification Law
CHICAGO – The Department of Financial and Professional Regulation (IDFPR) today accepted the recommendations of members of its Medical Disciplinary Board to provide Illinois physicians a 90-day grace period before imposing sanctions included in the Parental Notice of Abortion Act of 1995. After the federal court dissolved the long-standing injunction against implementing the Act, the law took effect yesterday, August 4, 2009. The provision of the Act addressed by the members’ recommendation would require disciplinary actions against physicians who “willfully” fail to provide notice of a planned procedure.

State Public Health Director Warns People To Avoid Contact With Bats
Dozens of bat exposures already documented as we enter busy bat season
SPRINGFIELD – Illinois Department of Public Health Director Dr. Damon T. Arnold is warning Illinoisans to avoid contact with bats as we approach the time of year when bats are the most active. Bats are the primary carrier of rabies in Illinois and already this year, 37 bats have tested positive for rabies in 13 counties.
