Governor Quinn Announces Capital Funding For Rockford Passenger Rail
State Invests $60 Million in Rail Passenger Service and Jobs
ROCKFORD – January 30, 2010. Governor Pat Quinn today visited Rockford to award $60 million in state capital funds to establish passenger rail service from Chicago to Rockford. The new service could result in as many as 2,000 new jobs, including more than 650 construction jobs.

Governor Quinn and U.S. Senator Durbin Announce Plans for High Speed Passenger Rail Investment
$1.2 Billion Award will Fund Chicago to St. Louis Corridor; Create 6,000 Jobs
CHICAGO – January 29, 2010. Governor Pat Quinn and U.S. Senator Dick Durbin kicked off a series of announcements in Chicago today to discuss details about Illinois’ $1.2 billion federal award to bring high-speed passenger rail service to Illinois by 2014. Illinois is among only three states to receive at least $1 billion for high-speed passenger rail, which will make the trip between Chicago and St. Louis faster than driving and will provide new train equipment.

Washington, DC — Geoffrey Obrzut, president of the Illinois Community College Board, represented one of the three Illinois education agencies honored by the Data Quality Campaign (DQC) as this year’s State Policymakers of the Year. CHICAGO – January 27, 2010. Governor Pat Quinn today announced that construction will begin this April to completely reconstruct the north-south section of Chicago’s Wacker Drive. The three-year, $366 million project will result in more than 4,000 jobs to the area and will be maintained through the Chicago Department of Transportation.

Rebuilding Will Improve Campus; Help Community Move Forward
DEKALB – January 27, 2010. Governor Pat Quinn today announced that Northern Illinois University (NIU) will get $8 million to renovate Cole Hall, which on Feb. 14, 2008 was the tragic scene of an unprovoked attack where five students were shot and 19 were wounded. An additional $2.3 million will be used to plan for the renovation of Stevens Building.

CHICAGO – January 26, 2010. Governor Quinn today joined with Ford Motor Company to announce the addition of 1,200 new jobs at Chicago-based manufacturing facilities to produce the next-generation Ford Explorer SUV. The auto maker will invest $400 million to launch the project.

State Regulators Announce Early Results from Sex Offender Match Program
CHICAGO – The Illinois Department of Financial and Professional Regulation (IDFPR) today announced it had indefinitely suspended the licenses of Edward Kent, a Real Estate Broker and Associate Appraiser who had been convicted of a crime that caused his name to be placed in the Illinois Sex Offender Database. After receiving a complaint about Mr. Kent, the Department undertook to compare its more than one million licensees against that database.

Illinois Department of Insurance Revokes License of Insurance Agent, Insurance Agency for Auto Insurance Scam
Department also imposes $100,000 fine
CHICAGO – The Illinois Department of Insurance has issued an Order against Daniel Martin Deitz of Bloomingdale and his Schaumburg-based agency Danny Martin CLU and Associates (collectively “Martin”) for distributing fraudulent letters on stationary falsely appearing to be that of the Department. Martin’s letters misled his current or former clients to believe their automobile insurance policies had expired and their driving licenses would be suspended unless they met certain insurance requirements.

SPRINGFIELD – Illinois Department of Public Health officials are warning consumers about Salmonella after the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) today announced Daniele International Inc. is recalling approximately 1,240,000 pounds of ready-to-eat (RTE) varieties of Italian sausage products because they may be contaminated with Salmonella.

Governor Quinn Announces Grant to Improve Energy Efficiency for Large Customers
Energy Program at UIUC Funded by Federal Recovery Dollars
CHAMPAIGN – January 21, 2010. Governor Pat Quinn today announced that the University of Illinois in Urbana-Champaign (UIUC) is the first recipient of a Large Customer Energy Efficiency Grant to help large energy users reduce the amount of energy they expend. The program is one component of Illinois' Energy Plan, the most comprehensive effort to date to address the state’s energy production. UIUC will receive more than $848,000 for a campus-wide energy efficiency initiative that will save $1 million per year in energy costs.

Johnson announced this year’s online application is available starting January 13 for older adults and people with disabilities to apply for Circuit Breaker and Illinois Cares Rx. A new state law that became effective on January 1 raised the annual income limits – making it possible for more people to qualify for the state benefits.

State Successfully Sells $3.466 Billion of General Obligation Bonds to Fund Employee Pensions
Second Largest Bond Sale by State of Illinois
CHICAGO – The Governor’s Office of Management and Budget of the State of Illinois today is pleased to announce the successful sale of $3.466 Billion in taxable General Obligation Bonds at a rate of 3.854% to be deposited into the Pension Contribution Fund. Funds from these bonds will reimburse or fund the State’s required deposit to its pension systems for fiscal year 2010. The bond principal amount will be paid in equal installments over the next five years.

Dept on Aging Urges Civic Involvement and Commitment
Planning underway for monthly events & themes to garner participation
SPRINGFIELD – The Illinois Department on Aging (IDoA) is kicking off efforts for the year-long campaign 2010: Year of the Engaged Older Adult. Last month, Governor Pat Quinn made the call to action to get individuals and families engaged in efforts to benefit their communities and thus improve the state. The focus for January is Intergenerational Programs: How Generations Support Generations. People should look for examples on how older adults are engaged in their community or neighborhood. Gathering stories will help all generations save their family stories, create stronger connections among generations and foster communication skills - interviewing, listening, writing, and reading. Liquor License Look-up Feature to Go Public with the New Year
CHICAGO -- As part of Governor Quinn’s “Transparency Initiative” to make more information available online, the Illinois Liquor Control Commission (ILCC) will go ‘live’ with its “License Validation Look-Up System” just in time for the New Year. By clicking on the Liquor Control Commission's website, patrons, neighbors and other interested parties will be able to check the status of a liquor license, the business name and the people who are listed as the owners of any licensed bar, restaurant or off-premises liquor store.

IEMA, ALA-IL Launch Teen Video Contest during Radon Action Month
High school students encouraged to create YouTube video promoting awareness of radon health hazards
SPRINGFIELD – Seeking an innovative way to spread the message about radon’s health hazards, the Illinois Emergency Management Agency (IEMA) and the American Lung Association in Illinois (ALA-IL) today launched the “2010 Illinois High School Radon Video Contest.” The agencies are encouraging high school students throughout the state to create 60-second YouTube videos about radon, a radioactive gas that causes an estimated 1,100 lung cancer deaths in Illinois each year.

Governor Quinn Announces Illinois Sets Historic Record for Fewest Motor Vehicle Fatalities in 88 years
Traffic Fatalities Drop Below 1,000 for First Time Since 1921
SPRINGFIELD – January 2, 2010. Governor Pat Quinn, along with Illinois State Police (ISP) Director Jonathon E. Monken, today announced that 2009 was the safest year on Illinois roadways in 88 years as traffic fatality numbers dropped below 1,000. Illinois now joins a small, elite group of states who have experienced less than 1,000 highway fatalities in a calendar year. During 2009, more than 100 fewer people were killed on Illinois highways than in 2008, while safety belt usage exceeded 91 percent.

Fire Service Veteran Larry Matkaitis to Lead Public Safety Agency
CHICAGO – January 2, 2010. Governor Pat Quinn today announced the appointment of fire service veteran and administrator Larry Matkaitis as Illinois State Fire Marshal. Matkaitis currently serves as the northern regional administrator in the Office of State Fire Marshal, a position he’s held since 2005, and prior to that spent over 30 years in the Chicago Fire Department.
