CHICAGO – May 30, 2010. Governor Quinn today encouraged the public to support Operation Hero Miles, a program that supports servicemembers who were injured in Iraq or Afghanistan. Operation Hero Miles assists families allowing them to visit their loved ones who are recovering in military hospitals around the world through the donation of unused frequent flyer miles.

Governor Quinn Signs Bill To Ban Texting While Driving
New Legislation Will Save Lives on Roads in Illinois
CHICAGO – August 6, 2009. Governor Pat Quinn signed a bill today at Northeastern Illinois University that bans motorists from sending text messages while driving in Illinois. Additionally, the governor signed legislation that makes it illegal to talk on a cell phone while driving through a highway construction zone or school speed zone. The new laws go into effect on January 1, 2010.

SPRINGFIELD - The Illinois Department of Healthcare and Family Services (HFS) today announced that it has obtained federal approval of a state policy change that will immediately allow $365 million in federal funding to be drawn, and used to pay Medicaid bills. By utilizing the enhanced federal match that is currently available, the state can leverage this funding to generate more than $900 million for Illinois’ healthcare providers over the next few months.

The “Silent Disease” – Osteoporosis Costs Billions Each Year
For the first year – Illinois celebrates May 10 as Osteoporosis Day
SPRINGFIELD – To bring awareness to what is often called the “silent disease,” Illinois Department of Public Health Director Dr. Damon T. Arnold today encouraged Illinoisans to recognize May 10 as Osteoporosis Day in Illinois. Osteoporosis is a serious disease that occurs when the body loses more bone mass than it replaces, causing bones to become thin, brittle and easily broken. Osteoporosis is often called the “silent disease” because bone loss happens without symptoms and may not be detected until a fracture occurs.

Liquor Control Commission April Underage Compliance Report
SPRINGFIELD – In April the Illinois Liquor Control Commission (ILCC) conducted compliance checks around the state and visited 125 businesses licensed to sell liquor. They cited 32 licensees for violations of liquor control laws. Seventy-five percent of the licensees visited complied with Illinois liquor laws and refused to serve underage customers.

SPRINGFIELD - The Illinois Department of Insurance announced today that Director of Insurance Michael T. McRaith issued the following disciplinary orders: • Erin M. Flanagan, Chicago - Insurance producer license revoked effective January, 9 2010. Ms. Flanagan was licensed to sell accident and health insurance since May 21, 2008. The Order of Revocation was issued as a result of an investigation revealing Ms. Flanagan had submitted 70 health applications to an insurer that contained invalid consumer information. The Order of Revocation also included a $7,000 civil penalty.

Your Chance to Improve Public Health in Illinois
State public health director invites communities to give input in the State Health Improvement Plan
SPRINGFIELD – This is the public’s chance to give input into improving the public health system in Illinois. Illinois Department of Public Health Director Dr. Damon T. Arnold is inviting health organizations, businesses, governments, community-based organizations, faith-based organizations, not-for-profit groups and the public in general to attend one of three hearings to offer input on updating the State Health Improvement Plan (SHIP). The SHIP is a long-term, strategic roadmap for improving the public health system and the health of Illinois’ residents. As required in Public Act 93-0975, the State Board of Health will hold three public hearings addressing the draft of the plan. The SHIP is presented to the governor for presentation to the General Assembly every four years.

Governor Quinn Announces Ground-breaking Consumer Health Insurance Reform Legislation
Taps nearly $200 Million in Federal Funds, Protects Consumer’s Rights
CHICAGO – May 4, 2010. Governor Pat Quinn today announced legislation that will expand insurance coverage for uninsured people with pre-existing conditions by tapping into nearly $200 million in federal funds this summer. As part of this legislative push, Governor Quinn is also introducing a measure to create a Health Consumer’s Bill of Rights.

Five front line employees awarded top honors
SPRINGFIELD - The Illinois Department of Corrections (IDOC) and the Illinois Department of Juvenile Justice (IDJJ) today honored five outstanding front line employees as 2010 Correctional Officers of the Year at a ceremony in Springfield. The winners were chosen from a field of 48 nominees, who were nominated for the award by their colleagues. The overall winners were chosen by the departments' executive staff.

MAP Update: 11,000 Eligible Students Denied Through April 29
Monetary Award Program grant announcements suspended April 19; Agency expects 220,000 denied
CHICAGO — The Illinois Student Assistance Commission (ISAC) announced that it has received 11,125 eligible Monetary Award Program (MAP) grant applications in the first 10 days since the agency began denying eligible applicants due to exhaustion of funds starting Monday, April 19. Students who were eligible but denied could still receive a full or partial MAP grant for the 2010-2011 academic year if additional program funds are received or if award claim rates are not as high as anticipated.

Building on last year’ unprecedented success, the invite-only Youth Town Hall Meeting was held at the Illinois Institute of Technology (IIT) with young adults, ages 16-20 from at-risk communities throughout Illinois. This year’s theme is “Nothing About Us Without Us.”
