Students to develop TV spots as part of “Ready Illinois College Challenge”
SPRINGFIELD – Students at Illinois colleges and universities have an opportunity to play an important role in the state’s efforts to increase public awareness of the earthquake risk in the state. The Illinois Emergency Management Agency (IEMA) and the Illinois Broadcasters Association (IBA) today launched the “Ready Illinois College Challenge,” which encourages college students to create and produce a 30-second TV spot promoting earthquake awareness and the state’s Ready Illinois website.

CHICAGO – The Illinois Department of Insurance has entered an Order prohibiting AIM Health Plans, Inc., CEO Clubs, Inc. (a/k/a Chief Executive Officers Club), Insurance Resource Group Inc., Integrated Insurance Marketing, Inc., Gary L. Karns, Jr. and Louis R. De Luca (“Respondents”) from transacting an unauthorized insurance business in Illinois. Each Respondent was also fined $25,000.

Illinois Department of Veterans’ Affairs Announces St. Clair County Office Relocation
BELLEVILLE – The Illinois Department of Veterans’ Affairs (IDVA) today announced the relocation of one of its St. Clair County service offices. Belleville Veterans will now be served from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday-Friday at 4519 W. Main St., Belleville, in the Illinois Department of Employment Security (IDES) building. The IDVA Veterans Service Office was previously located at 10 S. Jackson St., Belleville.

New Development for Low-Income Seniors Opens in Pilsen

CHICAGO – The Illinois Housing Development Authority (IHDA) today celebrated the grand opening of a new housing development featuring 73 affordable apartments for low-income seniors and a senior center. An estimated 100 jobs were created with the construction of the Casa Maravilla development in Chicago’s Pilsen neighborhood.

Governor Quinn Announces Temporary Extension of Successful Jobs Program
Extension of “Put Illinois to Work” Continues Program Until Congress Acts
CHICAGO – September 28, 2010. Governor Pat Quinn today announced the extension of the Put Illinois to Work (PIW) program for up to two months to serve as a bridge until Congress votes on an extension of the Temporary Assistance for Needy Families Emergency Contingency Fund (TANF/ECF). The federal program, which supports Put Illinois to Work, is set to expire on Sept. 30 unless Congress acts to extend the effective job creation measure. More than 26,000 workers have been hired since Put Illinois to Work was launched last April.

Governor Quinn Announces $7 Million to Expand Runways at Cahokia Airport and Create 178 Jobs
Opens $2.7 Million Runway Extension; Announces $4.4 Million Primary Runway Widening at St. Louis Downtown Airport
CAHOKIA – September 27, 2010. Governor Pat Quinn today joined transportation officials at the St. Louis Downtown Airport in Cahokia to open a $2.7 million runway extension and announce a $4.4 million investment to widen the primary runway. The runway expansions will accommodate growing demand and larger planes, while improving the safety of the airport. The airport is a major regional economic engine with an annual impact of approximately $300 million and nearly 1,900 full-time employees. When completed, the projects will have created 178 construction jobs.

Governor Quinn Announce ENERGY STAR® Rebate Program Generates $25 Million in Sales of 27,000 Appliances
Thousands of Customers Flocked to Stores to Cash in on Savings for Energy Efficient Appliances
CHICAGO – September 24, 2010. Governor Pat Quinn announced that today’s ENERGY STAR appliance rebate program generated more than $25 million in sales of more than 27,000 energy efficient appliances statewide. State officials estimate that between 8 a.m. and when the rebates were concluded at 10:30 a.m., consumers received an estimated $3.6 million in rebates.

Governor Pat Quinn was joined by municipal officials from across the state today to announce a $100 million capital investment in local transportation needs as part of Illinois Jobs Now! The $100 million will be distributed to local officials so they can repair municipal, township and county infrastructure; improve public safety; and put people to work throughout Illinois. Chicago region counties, municipalities and road districts will receive $59 million. This includes Cook, DuPage, Kane, Lake, McHenry and Will counties.

ICJIA Kicks Off Statewide Criminal Justice Planning Initiative to Address Crime Prevention, Law Enforcement
CHICAGO—Illinois Criminal Justice Information Authority (ICJIA) Executive Director Jack Cutrone today announced the start of a large-scale, statewide strategic planning initiative to formulate agency policy, research, and funding direction for the next several years. The initiative kicks off today with a two-day summit of about 200 local, state, and national lawmakers, policymakers, and criminal justice and mental health practitioners. ROCKFORD – September 18, 2010. Governor Pat Quinn today joined state and local leaders to announce the start of a nearly $70 million project to construct high-speed fiber optic broadband infrastructure in nine Illinois counties, including LaSalle, Ogle, Lee, Whiteside, Jo Daviess, Carroll, Stephenson, Winnebago, and Boone. Supported by $14 million from the Illinois Jobs Now! capital program and $10 million in private investments, the $46 million competitive federal award will create approximately 485 jobs.

Governor Quinn Announces Illinois as First State to Begin High-Speed Rail Construction
Track Improvements on Chicago-St. Louis Corridor Will Create Thousands of Jobs, Economic Boost for Illinois Communities
ALTON - September 17, 2010. Governor Pat Quinn today was joined by officials to announce the start of a $98 million project to upgrade an initial 90 miles of Union Pacific railroad track between Alton and Lincoln in preparation for high-speed rail service. This initial phase will create approximately 900 direct and indirect jobs, and represents the first high-speed rail upgrades in the nation. In total, developing the Chicago-St. Louis High Speed Rail corridor is anticipated to create and retain approximately 24,000 direct and indirect Illinois jobs. The project is funded through the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA).

Unemployment Rate Drops Again in August
Manufacturing Job Growth for Sixth Consecutive Month
CHICAGO – The Illinois seasonally adjusted unemployment rate dropped -0.2 points to 10.1 percent in August, according to data released today by the Illinois Department of Employment Security. August marks the eighth consecutive month to show steady or declining unemployment rates. Manufacturing added +900 jobs in August, the sixth consecutive monthly increase in this key sector.

Northstar, a consortium of experienced gaming and advertising professionals, was selected based on a rigorous and competitive procurement process. Northstar’s business plan anticipates an annual growth rate of 10.6 percent over the next five years, generating approximately $4.8 billion in net income. The increase in proceeds will enable the State to maintain its commitment to education, while funding capital projects that will create jobs for thousands of Illinois workers.

EAST PEORIA – September 14, 2010. Governor Pat Quinn today joined Illinois Department of Transportation (IDOT) Secretary Gary Hannig and local officials to kick off the Technology Boulevard and Edmund Street extension project in East Peoria. The $26 million project, which will provide access to the former Caterpillar Inc. property in the heart of the metropolitan area, will create 300 construction jobs. Future redevelopment at the 65-acre Brownfield site is expected to create an additional 2,300 jobs. The project is funded by Governor Quinn’s Illinois Jobs Now! capital construction program.

Construction set to begin on homes powered by solar and wind energy
JERSEYVILLE – The Illinois Housing Development Authority (IHDA) today celebrated a groundbreaking ceremony for 32 single-family affordable rental homes which will use solar and wind power to reduce energy bills. The development, known as Lexington Farms Subdivision in Jerseyville, will house qualified working families. An estimated 81 jobs will be created.

Governor Pat Quinn today visited the University of Illinois at Chicago to announce $2.5 million in capital funding that will allow the university to begin planning major campus upgrades. The project will receive a total of $20.8 million through the Illinois Jobs Now! capital construction program and is expected to generate around 140 construction jobs once it is underway.

CHICAGO – September 13, 2010. Governor Pat Quinn today released a statement urging the U.S. Congress to extend the Temporary Assistance for Needy Families Emergency Contingency Fund (TANF/ECF) for an additional year. The federal program supports Governor Quinn’s Put Illinois to Work program, which has created more than 26,000 jobs throughout Illinois. The federal program is set to expire on Sept. 30 unless Congress acts to extend the effective job creation measure.

IDHS Continues to Provide Disaster SNAP Benefits To Flood Victims

CHICAGO - The Illinois Department of Human Services (IDHS) has increased efforts to serve the overwhelming number of applicants for Disaster Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) benefits at participating local offices. Applications will be accepted through Friday, and benefits will not run out. Already, the department has approved SNAP, formerly known as Food Stamps, for more than 5,690 households with 18,320 persons and has issued a total of $2.4 million in benefits.

Formerly known as the Gary-Chicago-Milwaukee (GCM) Priority Corridor found at www.gcmtravel.com, the new state-of-the-art website located at www.travelmidwest.com includes several enhancements to provide valuable traveler information to serve the needs of motorists and the LMIGA partners. The traveler information coverage extends from Southern Wisconsin through Northern Illinois and Northern Indiana into Southwestern Michigan.

Illinois Department of Insurance Disciplinary Report for August 2010
SPRINGFIELD - The Illinois Department of Insurance announced today that Director of Insurance Michael T. McRaith issued the following disciplinary orders: • Darryl D. Witte, Channahon - Stipulation and Consent Order, effective June 16, 2010. Mr. Witte has been licensed to sell life, accident, health and variable insurance since July 11, 1996. The Stipulation and Consent Order, which includes a $5,000 civil forfeiture and corrective orders, alleges that Mr. Witte forged two consumers’ signatures to numerous annuity related applications and forms without the consumers’ knowledge or consent.

Illinois community college leaders express concerns over taxpayer support for proprietary schools
Two Illinois community college leaders today joined the chorus of voices raising concerns over taxpayer support for proprietary (for-profit) colleges through state and federal financial aid programs. Illinois Community College Board (ICCB) Vice-Chair Suzanne Morris and College of Lake County President Dr. Jerry Weber were among a large group of higher education professionals and interested parties to participate in a forum concerning for-profit colleges sponsored by Senator Dick Durbin in Chicago’s Dirksen Federal Building. Morris submitted written testimony and Weber spoke during the panel discussion.

Liquor Control Commission August Underage Compliance Report
SPRINGFIELD – In August the Illinois Liquor Control Commission (ILCC) conducted compliance checks around the state and visited 172 businesses licensed to sell liquor. They cited 37 licensees for violations of liquor control laws. Seventy-eight percent of the licensees visited complied with Illinois liquor laws and refused to serve underage customers.
