Local Unemployment Continues to Drop Across the State
Illinois Adds +100,300 Jobs Since January 2010
CHICAGO – Year-over-year unemployment rates for April dropped in every metropolitan area in Illinois for an unprecedented eighth consecutive month, according to preliminary data released today by the Illinois Department of Employment Security. That has not occurred since this data set was first built in 1976. The not seasonally adjusted data compares April 2011 to April 2010. The largest declines were in: Rockford (-3.8 points to 11.9 percent), Danville (-2.7 points to 9.6 percent), Decatur (-2.5 points to 9.7 percent), Peoria (-2.5 points to 8.0 percent), and Chicago-Joliet-Naperville (-2.0 points to 8.7 percent).

Illinois Department of Human Services Redeploy Illinois Initiative Saves State Millions
Statistics reveal significant reductions in juvenile incarceration rates
Chicago – The Illinois Department of Human Services’(IDHS) Redeploy Illinois initiative released the 2010 Cost Benefit Analysis Data. The statistics reveal significant reductions in the number of juveniles committed to the Department of Juvenile Justice (DJJ). Redeploy Illinois was implemented in 2005 in order to provide financial support to counties in their efforts to identify comprehensive community services for delinquent youth. The program has been successful in mobilizing communities to direct resources to youth offenders who otherwise would have been incarcerated. Counties receiving Redeploy funds commit to reducing their number of commitments by 25% in exchange for grant funds - according to the 2010 cost benefit analysis, on average the 8 Redeploy sites reduced their commitments in 2010 by 53% percent from their baselines. According to the per capita cost of incarcerating one juvenile in DJJ, this decrease in commitments translates to a $9,038, 927cost avoidance for the s

Unemployment Rate Falls 15th Time to 8.7 Percent
Illinois Adds 100,000 Jobs Since Recovery Began
CHICAGO – The seasonally adjusted unemployment rate fell for the 15th consecutive month, dropping 0.1 to 8.7 percent in April, according to preliminary data released today by the Illinois Department of Employment Security. This is the lowest unemployment rate since February 2009 when it was 8.6 percent. The national rate in April increased slightly by +0.2 to 9.0 percent. The Illinois rate has been equal to or below the U.S. rate for seven consecutive months.

State Marks Record Year, with Film Dollars Up 54% to $161 M
CHICAGO – May 10, 2011. Governor Pat Quinn was joined by Emmy Award-winning actor Kelsey Grammer and the producers of the new TV series “Boss” today to celebrate Cinespace Chicago Film Studios. The state is investing $5 million in capital funding into the new, state-of-the art film and television studio. The studio is slated to become the largest such facility in the United States outside Hollywood. The opening comes as the Illinois Film Office (IFO) reports a record $161 million in spending for 2010 and more than 8,000 job hires on film and TV projects.

U.S. Senators Dick Durbin (D-IL) and Mark Kirk (R-IL) joined Governor Pat Quinn in announcing that the U.S. Department of Transportation has awarded $186 million in high speed rail funding to finance track and other improvements on the Chicago to St. Louis corridor between Dwight and Joliet. Earlier today, the U.S. Department of Transportation notified Congressional Appropriators that they have reprogrammed $400 million of the $2 billion in funding that was rejected by the governor of Florida.

SPRINGFIELD – May 4, 2011. Governor Pat Quinn today urged people who have evacuated from flooded communities to heed instruction from public officials about returning to their homes. Ten communities have issued voluntary evacuation orders, while the city of Cairo called for a mandatory evacuation as river levels in the area began climbing to new record highs.

Illinois Veteran, Teacher Receives Dual Honors from State of Illinois
Retired Army Major Receives 1st Governor’s Award for Excellence in Education & May Veteran of the Month Honors
CHICAGO – On behalf of Gov. Pat Quinn and in conjunction with National Teacher Appreciation Day, the Illinois Department of Veterans’ Affairs (IDVA) today presented retired U.S. Army Major and Chicago Public Schools Teacher Aaron Rucker with the first-ever Governor’s Award for Excellence in Education in recognition of his outstanding service and contributions to public education. IDVA Director Dan Grant presented the Governor’s Award to Rucker, 42, during a ceremony at Marshall Metropolitan High School, 3250 W. Adams St., Chicago, where Rucker is a special education teacher. Director Grant also honored Rucker, a decorated veteran of the war in Afghanistan and a former Special Forces Officer, as May 2011 Veteran of the Month.

Statewide Cemetery Database Capturing Vast Majority of State’s Burials
Regulators point to success after only six months in operation
CHICAGO – Six months after the Cemetery Oversight Act’s on-line database became active, more than 17,900 burials have been electronically recorded in the statewide database, the Illinois Department of Financial and Professional Regulations (IDFPR) announced today. IDFPR estimates that nearly 75% of burials in the State are now being entered into the database. By creating the State’s first comprehensive burial records database, families will have a place to turn if they are unable to find the location of a loved one’s grave.

Governor Quinn Announces Pastificio Rana to Open First U.S. Plant in Illinois
State Investment Package Will Leverage Private Investment; Create 70 Jobs at New Production Facility
SPRINGFIELD – May 3, 2011. Governor Pat Quinn today announced that Italian pasta maker Pastificio Rana will open its first U.S. production facility in Illinois. The state is providing a business investment package worth more than $1 million that will leverage a $16.4 million private investment and support the creation of 70 jobs. The new facility, located in the Brewster Creek Business Park in Bartlett, will house the domestic production of Rana’s pasta and sauces.

Partnership Focuses on Motorist Responsibility, Aims to Save Lives
SPRINGFIELD –Illinois Department of Transportation, State Police, Gold Wing Road Riders Association (GWRRA) and A Brotherhood Aimed Towards Education (ABATE) today joined forces to launch the Start Seeing Motorcycles campaign and urge Illinois motorists to share the road and expect to see more motorcyclists on Illinois roadways soon. Governor Quinn also demonstrated his strong support for motorcycle safety and issued a proclamation declaring May as Motorcycle Awareness Month in Illinois.

Statement from Jonathon Monken, State Homeland Security Advisor, On the Death of Osama bin Laden
As the State Homeland Security Advisor to Governor Quinn, I have been in contact with the U.S. Department of Homeland Security regarding the death of Osama bin Laden. At this time, we are working closely with the State Terrorism and Intelligence Center (STIC) as intelligence experts there collect and disseminate information to our state and local law enforcement partners regarding this event. I am also in close communications with the Illinois State Police. The U.S. Department of Homeland Security has indicated that it does not intend to issue a National Terrorism Advisory System (NTAS) at this time. While our country remains at a heightened state of vigilance, we do not want the public to be alarmed. As always, it is important for people to remain vigilant, be aware of situations taking place around them and report anything that appears suspicious to local law enforcement agencies.
