Governor Quinn Honors Families of Fallen Illinois Heroes with Gold Star Mothers Ceremony
Twelve Mothers of Fallen Servicemembers Presented with Gold Star Banners
CHICAGO – September 30, 2012. Today Gold Star Banners were presented to 12 Illinois mothers whose sons and daughters died in combat while serving their country in the Global War on Terror. More than 170 members of Illinois’ Gold Star families who lost family members on active duty since Sept. 11, 2001 attended the ceremony at Chicago’s Cultural Center.

Hunters Reminded to Use Safe Practices in the field this Fall Hunting Season
Fall Archery Season opens October 1st for Deer and Turkey throughout Illinois
SPRINGFIELD, IL – With Archery season just around the corner for fall deer and turkey, the Illinois Department of Natural Resources is reminding all hunters to make safety a top priority when in the field this year. While hunting is one of the safest forms of outdoor recreation, thanks to the diligence of law-abiding and safety-minded hunters, incidents do happen. Last year in Illinois, there were 26 hunting incidents, one of them fatal. There have been six hunting incidents reported in the state so far in 2012.

Governor Quinn, Senator Durbin Announce $1 Million Federal Grant to Increase Exports in Illinois
STEP grant will expand access to global markets for Illinois small businesses
CHICAGO – September 28, 2012. Governor Pat Quinn and U.S. Senator Dick Durbin today announced that Illinois will receive a $1.07 million federal grant through the U.S. Small Business Administration’s State Trade and Export Promotion Program (STEP) to increase trade and investment in the state. Today’s announcement will help the state meet Governor Quinn's goal to double exports by 2014 and comes on the heels of his six-day trade mission to Brazil where he met with government and business leaders to strengthen bilateral cooperation in manufacturing, agriculture, biotechnology and education.

Illinois Reaches Milestone toward South Suburban Airport Approval
Layout Plan Submitted to FAA; Key Step Highlights Planning Progress, Land Acquisition Efforts
PEOTONE – September 27, 2012. Governor Pat Quinn today announced that Illinois has reached another major milestone toward approval of the South Suburban Airport by submitting to the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) a draft Airport Layout Plan for review. The Airport Layout Plan is the sixth of the nine key elements that make up the project’s Master Plan and further demonstrates Governor Quinn’s commitment to building the critical airport as soon as possible.

IDOT Statement on High-Speed Rail Milestone
CHICAGO – Illinois Transportation Secretary Ann L. Schneider issued the following statement regarding Illinois railcar manufacturer Nippon-Sharyo / Sumitomo, the intended awardee on a $352 million, multi-state procurement for construction of new passenger railcars. Caltrans, the lead agency on the procurement, has issued a Notice of Intent to Award the railcar contract to Rochelle, Ill.-based Nippon-Sharyo for the construction of 130, bi-level passenger railcars designed to better accommodate passengers and high-speed rail.

Multi-State, Public-Private Information Sharing Initiative Selected for Harvard ‘Bright Ideas’ Recognition
IEMA, Central U.S. Earthquake Consortium Working to Streamline Public-Private Communications During Disasters
SPRINGFIELD – An initiative to streamline information sharing between the public and private sectors during a multi-state disaster has earned national recognition from the Ash Center for Democratic Governance and Innovation at the John F. Kennedy School of Government, Harvard University. CHICAGO –The Illinois Department of Veterans’ Affairs (IDVA) has honored Michael Anaya Sr., a Hinsdale resident and veteran of both the US Air Force and US Navy, as its October 2012 “Veteran of the Month.” Anaya, who serves as Director of the Jesse Brown VA Medical Center in Chicago, was honored during a ceremony Monday at Chicago’s National Latino Education Institute. The Illinois Veteran of the Month award is a distinction bestowed upon military veterans who continue to serve their communities after leaving the military.

Governor Quinn Announces Start of Construction on New Transportation Center in Joliet
Station Project on High-Speed Line Creates Jobs, Improves Safety
JOLIET– September 21, 2012. Governor Pat Quinn, joined by Illinois Transportation Secretary Ann L. Schneider and other state and local officials, broke ground today on a new multimodal transportation center in downtown Joliet. As part of Governor Quinn’s commitment to building a 21st century infrastructure in Illinois, the project begins a complete overhaul of a key stop on the Chicago-to-St. Louis high-speed rail line. The $42 million project, which includes a $32 million commitment from Governor Quinn’s Illinois Jobs Now! capital program, will create almost 400 construction jobs, improve safety for travelers and serve as a catalyst for future transit-oriented development in Joliet’s historic City Center.

Former congressman appointed to Illinois Community College Board
Giannoulias applauds Governor on selection of Bruce, re-appointment of Rendleman
(Springfield) – Governor Pat Quinn has appointed Terry L. Bruce, Olney, to the Illinois Community College Board (ICCB). Bruce is the chief executive officer of Illinois Eastern Community Colleges (IECC) with colleges in Olney, Fairfield, Robinson, and Mt. Carmel. He was a U. S. Congressman from 1985 to 1993, where he served on the Education, Agriculture, and Commerce committees. Bruce also served as a State Senator from 1970 to 1984. He is a past president of the Illinois Council of Community College Presidents.

Announce Seat Check Saturday Statewide
SPRINGFIELD – The Illinois Department of Transportation (IDOT), Illinois Secretary of State Jesse White’s Office and AAA joined efforts today to launch the 2012 National Child Passenger Safety Week in Illinois. The annual campaign brings attention to the importance of properly securing all children in appropriate car seats, booster seats or standard seat belts. The week concludes with National Seat Check Saturday on Sept. 22, when certified child passenger safety technicians will provide free advice and hands-on child safety seat inspections at 80 events across Illinois. This year’s campaign, titled “Cookies, Cuddles and Car Seats,” is aimed to create awareness of the role grandparents play regarding the overall well-being of their grandchildren when traveling.

Governor Quinn Announces Record High of Illinois Exports to Mexico
Calls Mexican Independence Day a time to honor a century of friendship, trade
CHICAGO, IL - September 15, 2012. On the eve of Mexican Independence Day, Governor Pat Quinn today announced that Illinois exports to Mexico in the first half of 2012 topped $3 billion - a 13.7 percent increase over the previous year and a new record high. The state’s robust trading relationship with Mexico has been enhanced by the Illinois Office of Trade and Investment in Mexico City, as well as a century-long tradition of friendship and trade between Illinois and Mexico. Illinois exports overall are at the highest level in a decade and today’s announcement is the latest step towards Governor Quinn’s goal of doubling Illinois exports by 2015.

SPRINGFIELD - The State Energy Office at the Illinois Department of Commerce and Economic Opportunity (DCEO) is pleased to announce two grant opportunities to assist local governments, for-profit, and not-for-profit businesses and organizations with their recycling/composting efforts. Entities with traditional recycling (fiber, plastic, metal, and glass) projects may apply for funding through the Illinois Recycling Grants Program. Projects involving the composting of food scraps may be eligible for funding through the Food Scrap Composting Grants Program.

State Recognizes September as Healthy Aging Month; Urges Seniors to Get Flu Shots
Getting a vaccination this month will protect through the entire flu season
SPRINGFIELD - Illinois Department on Aging Director John K. Holton, Ph.D., today reminded that September is Healthy Aging Month, an annual health observance that focuses attention on the positive aspects of growing older. The observance proves a good time for older adults to assess how they are doing and take preventive measures regarding their health. September’s Healthy Aging Month is also the kick off of preparing for the upcoming flu season. Seniors are at increased risk for the flu, especially those who have certain chronic health conditions. Seniors should make it a priority to get a flu vaccine.

$10.3 million public-private partnership to boost careers in Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM)
CHICAGO – September 14, 2012. Governor Pat Quinn today unveiled a unique $10.3 million public-private partnership that will better prepare thousands of Illinois students for careers in Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) fields. Joined by Illinois business, high-tech and education leaders at the innovative “1871” digital start-up center in Chicago’s Merchandise Mart, Governor Quinn announced that eight organizations will be awarded contracts to develop “STEM Learning Exchanges” that link educational opportunities with business resources to prepare students to compete in the global economy. The partnership is part the governor’s commitment to improve education in Illinois.

Illinois Establishment Recalls Uninspected Tamales
SPRINGFIELD, Ill. – A Chicago food company has voluntarily recalled 2,970 pounds of tamales. Meca Foods, the manufacturer of La Tia Tamales, issued the recall because the product was produced in a facility that is not state inspected. The Class I, or high risk, recall includes 13,500 items. Their labels read: Home Style Tamales – Green Pork; Home Style Tamales – Red Pork; and Home Style Tamales – Chicken.

Governor Quinn Salutes Illinois Fallen Heroes on September 11
Lauds “Portrait of a Soldier” Exhibit in Chicago; Let us “Remember, Reflect, Serve”
CHICAGO – September 11, 2012. Governor Pat Quinn called for a day of “remembrance, reflection and service” to honor the victims of the September 11, 2001 attacks and servicemembers killed in the global war on terror. The governor today unveiled the “Portrait of a Soldier” traveling exhibit now on display at the Chicago Public Library Archer Heights Branch. This riveting collection by Mattoon artist Cameron Schilling features nearly 300 hand-drawn portraits of each Illinois servicemember killed in Iraq and Afghanistan. Thus far in 2012, 10 Illinois service members have been killed in Afghanistan.

Liquor Control Commission August Underage Compliance Report
SPRINGFIELD – In August the Illinois Liquor Control Commission (ILCC) conducted compliance checks around the state and visited 177 businesses licensed to sell liquor. They cited 51 licensees for violations of liquor control laws. Seventy-one percent of the licensees visited complied with Illinois liquor laws and refused to serve underage customers.

Federal funding supports 29 AmeriCorps Programs in nearly 300 sites across Illinois

Governor Quinn Announces $8 Million for National Guard Facility at Heartland Community College
Project Will Add College Classroom Space and Locate Key Guard Domestic Response Unit in Normal
NORMAL – September 10, 2012. Governor Pat Quinn today announced $8 million in state funding for the Illinois Department of Military Affairs and Heartland Community College (HCC) to build an Illinois Army National Guard (ILARNG) facility on the college’s campus. Combined with $10 million in federal military construction funds, the $18 million project will create and support more than 100 construction jobs. Once completed, 22 full-time and approximately 200 part-time ILARNG soldiers will work out of the facility.

Ceremony Highlights Heroism and Bravery of Illinois Servicemembers
TROY – September 8, 2012. Governor Pat Quinn today joined Gold Star families and local leaders at a ceremony honoring Senior Airman Bradley Smith with the Silver Star, the third-highest military decoration that can be awarded to any branch of the United States Military. The posthumous award is in recognition of Smith’s heroic acts to protect other airmen following an attack in the Kandahar Province of Afghanistan on January 3, 2010.

Illinois Department Of Agriculture To Lead Reverse Trade Mission
23 international grain buyers scheduled to arrive Monday for tour of the state’s grain industry
SPRINGFIELD, Ill. – Illinois’ export-dependent grain industry will have an opportunity next week to demonstrate its vast production and distribution capabilities to 23 potential foreign customers. The Illinois Department of Agriculture has arranged to bring the group here as part of its annual Grain Tour, a five-day “reverse trade mission” that begins Monday, Sept. 10. Participants will see firsthand Illinois’ state-of-the-art grain production, handling and storage techniques and learn about trade opportunities with the state’s producers and suppliers.

IEMA Hosts Summit to Develop New State Homeland Security Strategy
Input Gathered at Eight Town Hall Meetings throughout State
SPRINGFIELD – After nearly a year of listening to emergency responders, business leaders, government representatives and others from across the state, the Illinois Emergency Management Agency (IEMA) is hosting a two-day summit Thursday and Friday in Springfield to mold that input into the state’s new homeland security strategy. The Illinois Homeland Security Vision 2020 initiative was launched last fall as a statewide, grass-roots initiative to engage Illinois’ residents and organizations in the revision of the state’s strategy for dealing with current and emerging threats and risks, citizen preparedness and disaster response and recovery.

Another $46 Million in Benefit Fraud Identified
New Program’s Second Phase Fights Waste, Fraud and Abuse
CHICAGO – More than 12,000 individuals who wrongfully collected nearly $46 million in unemployment insurance benefits while gainfully employed have been notified that if they do not agree to a repayment plan their federal and state taxes will be garnished and they will not be eligible for future benefits, the Illinois Department of Employment Security (IDES) announced today. This is the second phase of a new integrity initiative designed to root out waste, fraud and abuse and ensure that business contributions that fund benefit payments reach those who truly are in need. The phase two timing is tied to the filing of federal tax returns for individuals who requested an extension.
