Governor Quinn Announces Illinois Awarded Grant to Bolster STEM Programs
Three Illinois Higher Ed Institutions to Receive Expert Technical Assistance to Prepare Students for 21st Century Careers
CHICAGO – Governor Pat Quinn today announced that Illinois has been awarded a technical assistance grant to help three institutions of higher learning bolster their Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) programs. The non-monetary grant will provide assistance and guidance to the University of Illinois at Chicago, Southern Illinois University Carbondale and City Colleges of Chicago, and complements the ongoing work in this area for Illinois. Today’s announcement is part of Governor Quinn’s agenda to prepare every student for college, career and beyond.

Governor Quinn and Local Leaders Break Ground on $3.4 Billion Elgin O’Hare Western Access Project
New Illinois Route 390 is First Part of the State’s Largest Roadway Project and Will Create Thousands of Jobs
ITASCA – Governor Pat Quinn, Illinois Tollway Executive Director Kristi Lafleur, Transportation Secretary Ann L. Schneider and DuPage County Board Chairman Dan Cronin today broke ground on the long-awaited Elgin O’Hare Western Access Project - the largest roadway project in the state and one of the largest in the nation. The $3.4 billion project includes 17 miles of new toll roads and 15 new or improved interchanges and will bring needed congestion relief, reduced travel times, new access to O’Hare International Airport and thousands of jobs for residents of the region. The historic project is part of Governor Quinn’s agenda to create jobs and drive Illinois’ economy forward.

Ceremony at Old State Capitol Recognizes the Top Student from Each College and University in Illinois
SPRINGFIELD – Governor Pat Quinn today announced the names of the state’s outstanding college students who will be honored by the Lincoln Academy of Illinois. The Academy will recognize the students during the annual Student Laureate Convocation at 11 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 2 at the Old State Capitol State Historic Site in Springfield.

Illinois Public, Private Leaders Unite to Bring Energy-Efficiency to the Top-Attended Aquarium in the Nation
CHICAGO – Governor Pat Quinn and Shedd Aquarium today kicked-off the first phase of the institution’s clean-energy initiative with the installation of 913 photovoltaic solar panels on top of the aquarium’s world-class marine mammal pavilion. In an event held on the roof of the Abbott Oceanarium, the Governor, along with Shedd leadership and Illinois sustainability champions, unveiled the 265-kilowatt project that is the biggest solar panel installation in any cultural institution in the state of Illinois funded through a public and private partnership.

The Get Skills to Work coalition, a collaborative program from GE, is a new statewide veterans’ skills partnership between Illinois, the Illinois Manufacturers’ Association and participating community colleges that will locate employers who want to hire returning veterans and provide the training necessary for those jobs. Today’s announcement is part of Governor Quinn’s commitment to honor, protect and support the men and women who have served our nation.

Governor Quinn Proclaims Downers Grove North High School Day in Illinois
CHICAGO – Governor Pat Quinn today proclaimed October 15, 2013 to be Downers Grove North High School Day in Illinois in honor of the inspirational Anne Wagner and the classmates who rallied to support her. Anne, who has Down syndrome, missed half of her sophomore year and almost all of her junior year in high school after being diagnosed with leukemia. After returning to school in her senior year, an organic movement of students held a successful social networking drive to elect Anne this year’s Homecoming Queen. The Governor’s proclamation lauds Anne’s bravery and her classmates’ passion to honor her.

The Veterans Licensing and Certification Demonstration Policy Academy, formed by the National Governors Association (NGA), will help selected states create clear pathways for veterans to obtain state-level credentials for certain law enforcement and health care careers. Today’s announcement reflects Governor Quinn’s and Illinois’ leadership to date on making veterans’ military training count toward civilian licensure.

Jacksonville Fire Department’s Mascot to Appear on NBC Television Drama “Chicago Fire”
JACKSONVILLE – The Office of the Illinois State Fire Marshal today joined Governor Pat Quinn as he proclaimed Oct. 11 as “Smokey the Dog Day” in Illinois to recognize the achievements of “Smokey,” the Jacksonville Fire Department’s fire dog. The 4-year-old black Labrador/retriever mix was chosen to appear on the television drama “Chicago Fire” after she won the “Today” show’s Top Dog competition. The honor guarantees her a role in an episode of the drama, scheduled to be filmed between Oct. 7 and May 31 in Chicago.

Governor Quinn Celebrates Latino Inventors, Trailblazers
Exhibit at Chicago’s James R. Thompson Center Runs Through October 11
CHICAGO – Creators of the ballpoint pen, hydrogen battery and “victory lap” are just a few of the Latino “Inventors, Innovators and Trailblazers” being celebrated by Governor Pat Quinn in an exhibit that opened today in the James R. Thompson Center. As part of Governor Quinn’s celebration of Latino Heritage Month, a dozen Latino inventors are profiled, from José Labandera – the 19th century Ecuadorian sailor who built the first successful submarine – to Dr. Luis Von Ahn, a 34-year old Guatemalan mathematician who created CAPTCHA, the twisted letters seen on computer screens which users must retype to prove they’re human.
