Governor Quinn Announces Illinois Awarded $17.6 Million for Early Learning Race to the Top
Key Federal Grant to Boost State-Funded Early Education Programs
CHICAGO — Governor Pat Quinn today announced that Illinois is one of six states to receive a supplemental award from the 2013 Race to the Top-Early Learning Challenge grant fund to improve early learning programs across the state. The award of $17.6 million is in addition to the $34 million the state won through the competitive, federal Race to the Top program last year to help the state’s youngest learners. Today’s announcement is part of Governor Quinn’s agenda to give every child the opportunity for a high quality education.

State’s Leading Health Insurance Exchange Doubling its Workforce to Serve More Americans Shopping for Healthcare Through the Affordable Care Act
CHICAGO – Governor Pat Quinn and GoHealth LLC today announced that Illinois’ leading health insurance exchange is adding 90,000 square feet in the Merchandise Mart in Chicago as it expands to serve the influx of Americans shopping for health insurance under the Affordable Care Act. The company plans to create 450 additional jobs by the end of 2013 - more than doubling its workforce this year. The announcement is part of Governor Quinn’s agenda to drive Illinois’ economy forward and create jobs.

New Law Limits Liability for Landowners Who Allow Public Access for Conservation and Outdoor Recreation
CHICAGO – Governor Pat Quinn today signed into law a bill that will increase protections for those who open their land to the public for conservation and recreational opportunities. Senate Bill 1042 limits liability for landowners who allow the public to freely access their property for activities such as bird watching, biking, hiking, fishing and paddling. This law will bring Illinois in line with other states that offer such liability protection.

Governor Quinn Announces Illinois State Fair Attendance Soars to Highest Level Since 2002
Several New Records Set for Grandstand Entertainment, Livestock Auction, and Horse Racing
SPRINGFIELD – Governor Pat Quinn today announced that the recently concluded Illinois State Fair reported its highest attendance in more than ten years. A total of 961,142 fairgoers passed through the gates this year, an increase of five percent – or 42,707 visitors – compared to a year ago, when attendance was 918,435. The figure is the fair’s highest attendance since 2002, when an estimated 1.2 million people visited the fair.

SCHAUMBURG – Governor Pat Quinn and Rittal Corporation executives today announced that the German manufacturing company is moving its United States headquarters to Illinois from Ohio. The relocation to the Woodfield Corporate Center in Schaumburg is expected to create 40 jobs and allow the U.S. subsidiary of privately owned Rittal GmbH better access to its widespread U.S. customer base. Governor Quinn personally recruited Rittal to Illinois, meeting with owner and CEO Friedhelm Loh in December in Germany.

Governor Quinn Signs New Speed Limit Law for Rural Highways
New Law Increases Speed Limit to 70 mph on Rural Four-Lane Highways, Lowers Excessive Speed Limit to Promote Safety
CHICAGO – Governor Pat Quinn today signed a new law to increase the speed limit from 65 to 70 miles-per-hour (mph) on rural four-lane highways, and to lower the limit by five mph for excessive speeding. The law will bring Illinois’ speed limit in line with 36 other states that have speed limits of 70 mph or higher on some portion of their roadways, including other large states such as California, Florida, Texas and Ohio, and neighboring states such as Indiana, Kentucky, Missouri, Iowa and Michigan. The bill passed with significant bipartisan support in both chambers.

ROCKFORD – Governor Quinn today signed legislation that will help Winnebago County and its municipalities expand its regional athletic facilities. According to the Rockford Area Convention and Visitors Bureau, the new law will increase visitor spending by $16 million, create more than 400 new jobs, and generate $1.9 million in new tax revenue. CHICAGO – Illinois State Fire Marshal Larry Matkaitis today issued a statement regarding the proposal of the Office of the State Fire Marshal (OSFM) to update Illinois’ fire safety code for the first time in more than a decade.
